Not all that glitters is gold
What is it about big cities that draws people? It seems like so many people itch to leave the place they were raised as soon as they're through with school. I know — I was one of those people. After 22 years of living in small Midwestern towns, I needed to see what all the fuss was about. Seven million people in the San Francisco Bay Area can't be wrong, yeah? Well, it's been almost six months now. Overall I'm glad I made the jump. I've got a good job, a good place to live, and there's no shortage of things to do around here. (You may be surprised to learn that the last thing can't always be said for Midwestern towns.) I wanted something different; that's what I got.
But not everything about city life is peachy. For example, it's quite hard to make friends because of the stereotypical cold "keep to yourself" attitude of large cities. Of course, I'll be the first to admit that I'm not trying hard enough. I spent this Saturday night sewing some pants and washing dishes, when I could have been at some hip place meeting hip people. But I feel like having to go out and hunt for friends is highly artificial. I'd rather just let it happen. (And besides, nobody wants to hang out with a guy with ripped dress pants.)
A friend of mine moved to a big city on the other coast, and she's having a tougher time with the adjustment. We exchanged stories on the phone this morning, and it sounds like our experiences are similar. We agreed that things will improve in time. But since we're impatient and need instant gratification, here's a mix to help ease the lonely self-pitying voices in our heads. Cheers.

Let's give "It Hasn't Happened Yet" an Honorable Mention for that mix. I love William Shatner's stuff, but it always seems too over-the-top to include when I'm putting the mix together.
